Why am I getting a tooltip to upgrade my translation memory?

With Studio 2019 SR1 we are introducing an optimized TM thanks to better leverage both in the areas of context and fuzzy matching. To get this benefit you will need to upgrade your TM/TMs. Studio will give you a gentle reminder with an orange icon and tooltip to recommend that you upgrade your TM.

How do I upgrade my translation memory/memories?

You can choose when you want to upgrade a TM. To upgrade them you can use the ‘Upgrade Translation Memories Wizard’ on the Studio Welcome screen to add multiple TMs to this process to upgrade in a batch. You can also use the upgrade button once you have added the TM to a project.

Will TMs upgraded in Studio 2019 SR1 be compatible in Studio 2017 SR1?

Yes, users on SDL Trados Studio 2017 SR1 will also receive a cumulative update (CU15) release with the same enhancements.  Your TMs, termbases and project files will then work seamlessly within the latest updated version.

Will TMs upgraded in Studio 2019 SR1 be compatible in Studio 2015?

To get the best possible performance from translation memories created in more recent versions of SDL Trados Studio (2017 CU15 and 2019 SR1), we recommend that all Studio 2015 users convert these TMs with our free "SDL TM Compatibility Plugin" from our AppStore. Users on 2015 will not benefit from the context match and fuzzy match enhancements.

What is SDL Language Cloud Terminology?

This is our new next-generation offering for terminology management and is now available as a paid subscription. Currently it is difficult to share local file-based termbases, you can share termbases through a terminology server but this is limited to larger companies who can afford this solution.

The first release of SDL Language Cloud Terminology focuses on providing an easy-to-use terminology management solution that meets the needs of individuals and businesses alike. You can benefit from easy termbase setup and sharing in your supply chain via direct import of Excel-based glossaries to tight integration with SDL Trados Studio for term recognition and verification. Future updates will keep adding functionality to this cloud-based offering.

Will I have access to a free SDL Language Cloud Terminology termbase?

Yes, every user can create one termbase, add and edit entries as well as access it from the browser and in SDL Trados Studio. Sharing and other features such as easy import from Excel are not available in the free offering.

What will happen to the termbases I have already created in SDL Language Cloud Terminology Beta?

The termbases you have created in your account are still available and will not be deleted. However, you will not have the full terminology features such as browsing content and editing and adding entries. To keep using these benefits as well as integration with Studio, consider purchasing one of our new subscriptions for individuals and businesses.

If you have created more than one termbase during the Beta period and move to the new free package, then you will have to pick one termbase to keep. All of the remaining termbases will be deleted.

However, if you have created more than one termbase during the Beta period and want to keep all of them, you will need to move to the paid subscription for individuals or businesses.

How do I get the sharing capabilities for SDL Language Cloud termbases?

Sharing of SDL Language Cloud termbases is only available if you have purchased a business package.

Which versions of SDL Trados Studio can I access SDL Language Cloud Terminology from?

You can only use SDL Language Cloud Terminology if you have SDL Trados Studio 2019 SR1 or a more recent version.

How do I access my Language Cloud Terminology account?

Can I open a file-based MultiTerm termbase (.sdltb) in SDL Language Cloud Terminology?

No, at this point you can’t directly upload a file-based MultiTerm termbase (.sdltb) into Language Cloud Terminology. However, you can export data from MultiTerm and into a Language Cloud termbase. Follow these steps:

  1. Save your MultiTerm termbase definition as an XDT file. See this help page for more information.
  2. Export your MultiTerm termbase into MultiTerm XML, using the default export definition. See this help page for more information (use MultiTerm XML as an export definition).
  3. Now that you have an .xdt and a matching .xml file, you are ready to import the data into Language Cloud Terminology.
  4. Log into Language Cloud and access your terminology resources at
  5. Create a new termbase in Language Cloud. When creating the termbase, be sure to use the option to load an existing MultiTerm termbase definition. Use the .xdt file you saved in step 1.
  6. After the termbase has been created, use the import feature to import the XML file you created in step 2.
You now have a Language Cloud termbase whose content is the same as in MultiTerm, and you are now ready to share it with others (if you have a business subscription) as well as access it from SDL Trados Studio.

Watch a video on how to do this here.

Why has Alignment Edit mode been removed?

We have removed Alignment Edit Mode option from the Ribbon and introduced a better way of selecting segments. You can now easily select and handle multiple segment pairs directly in the alignment editor.
