What is SDL Trados Studio 2019?

+
SDL Trados Studio 2019 is a complete software environment utilizing a translation memory. It allows language professionals to edit or review translations, manage translation projects, organize terminology and connect to machine translation. SDL Trados Studio 2019 is built on the same open platform as SDL Trados Studio 2017 and uses the same bilingual file, translation memory and termbase formats.

What's new in SDL Trados Studio 2019?

+

SDL Trados Studio has evolved to bring you a new experience, with additional features and updates to transform how new users get up and running, help experienced users make the most of the powerful features, ensure new levels of productivity for the whole translation team and help in delivering unrivalled quality in your translations.

SDL Trados Studio 2019 also includes SDL MultiTerm 2019 for best-in-class terminology management.

How do I get SDL Trados Studio 2019?

+

Existing customers with an active PSMA (support and maintenance agreement) receive a free upgrade to Studio 2019. This can be downloaded from your SDL Account.

Existing customers who don’t have an active PSMA can purchase an upgrade through our online shop, or by contacting their Account Manager.

Please note: Customers who wish to upgrade from Studio 2014 to Studio 2019 will be able to purchase an upgrade until 31st December 2018.

Can I upgrade to Studio 2019 from older versions of the software?

+

Until 31st December 2018 you can benefit from special upgrade pricing, from Studio 2014, 2015 and 2017.

After 31st December 2018, you will be able to upgrade from Studio 2015 and Studio 2017, however the upgrade path from Studio 2014 will be closed.

Will older versions of the software still be supported by SDL?

+

SDL Trados Studio 2019 is the fully supported release of SDL Trados Studio. SDL continues to support Studio 2017 as the limited support release.

Following the release of Studio 2019, SDL has moved Studio 2015 to an extended support period that will end on 31st December 2018, after which it will be moved to a retired state.

SDL Trados Studio 2014, 2011 and 2009 are in retired state and are no longer supported. SDL does not provide technical assistance, issue service packs or hot fixes for retired releases.

When I upgrade, can I have SDL Trados Studio 2019 installed along with older versions of the software?

+
This will vary depending on what version you are upgrading from:
  • If your original license was for Studio 2014/2015 Professional and you want to retain both versions, you should consider purchasing a full license instead of an upgrade.
For Studio 2014/2015 Freelance licenses you can continue to run the Studio 2014/2015 application if you do not deactivate your license after upgrading. Your previous Studio 2014/2015 license will be marked as inactive in your SDL Account and will be automatically removed if, for any reason, the license is deactivated.
  • If your original license was for Studio 2017 Freelance/Professional, you will be able to run Studio 2017 and Studio 2019 on the same machine, as the license for Studio 2019 is a 'compound license'. For this to work, you will need to update Studio 2017 with the most recent CU*12 (available from August 3rd, 2018) and it will then accept your new Studio 2019 license. Note that this is for Single license owners only and will not work for a Network license. Network licenses can be configured in such a way that multiple versions of Studio can be served by the same license server, since it can run multiple licenses for different Studio versions in parallel. Contact your account manager for details.

*CU stands for cumulative update. At SDL we are constantly reviewing and improving our products and release enhancements and hotfixes as and when required. These are bundled into cumulative updates that are installed automatically using the AutoUpdate functionality in SDL Trados Studio and SDL MultiTerm. You will be notified by the software automatically when a cumulative update is available.

How do I upgrade to SDL Trados Studio 2019?

+

The upgrade process is the same for all users owning a Single or Network license(s).

If you already have Studio 2014/2015/2017 and you upgrade to Studio 2019, you need to:

1. Deactivate your current SDL Trados Studio 2014/2015/2017 license(s). To do this, go to your SDL Trados Studio application. Click on Help > Product Activation > Deactivate

2. Upgrade your license from your SDL Account

  • Login to your SDL Account and go to the Licenses section.
  • On the left hand side you should see “Upgrades” available, marked with a yellow arrow icon. Click on the icon and you will be able to see the Upgrades page.
  • Click on the Upgrade button to process the license upgrade. If you have several licenses, please mind that you need to choose the number of user licenses which you wish to upgrade.
  • A new licensing code will be generated.

3. Activate your Studio 2019. Copy the new licensing code and paste it in the Studio 2019 application to activate it.

Note: SDL Trados Studio 2017 Freelance/Professional Single license owners only

Customers upgrading from Studio 2017 with a single license will be able to use their new Studio 2019 license to run both Studio 2019 and Studio 2017 at the same time, as the license for Studio 2019 is a 'compound license'. For this to work, you will need to update Studio 2017 with the most recent CU*.

Note: SDL Trados Studio Freelance Edition users only

Customers upgrading their SDL Trados Studio Freelance Edition to Studio 2019 Freelance who don’t deactivate their license can continue to run the Studio 2014/2015 application alongside Studio 2019. Your previous version (2014/2015) will be marked as inactive in your SDL Account and will be automatically removed if, for any reason, the license is deactivated.

What are the system requirements for SDL Trados Studio 2019?

+

SDL Trados Studio 2019 supports Microsoft Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.

As a minimum requirement, we recommend an Intel or compatible CPU-based computer with 8 GB RAM and a screen resolution of 1024x768.

For optimum performance, we recommend a 64-bit operating system, 16 GB RAM, an SSD drive and a recent Intel or compatible CPU. Full support for 4K hi-resolution screens is planned and will be implemented incrementally in future releases. You can find more information on how to deal with display issues in this Knowledge Base (KB) article or by running an application from the SDL AppStore which implements a fix, mentioned in the KB article.

Is Studio compatible with previous versions?

+

Yes, we offer full compatibility in terms of translation memory and bilingual files across Studio 2015, 2017 and 2019.

Although translation memories and bilingual files are compatible across Studio versions from 2009 to 2019, as we continue to add more features, there are potential discrepancies in feature availability, word counts and file types when working in older versions of Studio. Some of the latest features such as upLIFT are only fully available in Studio 2017 and 2019.

SDL Trados Studio 2019 will enable you to open TTX, ITD files and old Trados Word bilingual files, as well as use translation memories from older versions of SDL Trados Studio. It also features support for industry standards such as TMX (for translation memories), TBX (for terminology databases) and also XLIFF (as a file format for translation). Extended file type support is also available via the SDL Appstore for third party formats such as Wordfast.

Studio 2019 is compatible with GroupShare 2017 (all versions) and GroupShare 2015. We strongly recommend using the latest released versions of GroupShare 2017 and 2015. For details on latest releases, see our Knowledge Base for GroupShare 2017 SR1 and GroupShare 2015.

Will there be a Groupshare release? If so, when will it take place?

+

Based on our customers’ feedback, we are changing the release pattern of SDL Trados GroupShare. We will release more frequent updates via cumulative updates and, where necessary, service releases instead of full major releases. This helps our customers to have full re-installations less frequently than now. Against this background, there are no planned major releases in 2018 for GroupShare, effectively decoupling the GroupShare release cadence from SDL Trados Studio. Since Studio 2019 is fully compatible with GroupShare 2017 and 2015, you will be able to continue working with that version. At the end of 2017, we released GroupShare 2017 SR1 with a number of key new features which include the SDL Online Editor, upLIFT for server-based TMs, and a new and more refined web user experience. Moving forward in 2018, we will enhance that release with a number of cumulative updates.

Will Studio 2019 be compatible with Passolo?

+

It is possible to export software string lists from SDL Passolo 2018 to SDLXLIFF format for translation in Studio, and then re-import them. SDL Passolo 2018 is compatible with both Studio 2019 and 2017 for sending and receiving SDLXLIFF files.

What is the difference between Studio 2019 Starter, Studio 2019 Freelance and Studio 2019 Professional Editions?

+
SDL Trados Studio is available in three different editions: Starter, Freelance and Professional. The reason behind having separate editions is that freelance translators do not usually require all the functionality within the full Professional license. To see the differences between the different editions please visit this page.
